Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially opened a new 800-metre-long tunnel on Umm Suqeim Street, a major move aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing traffic flow in one of the city’s most dynamic corridors. This latest development is part of the larger Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor enhancement, which stretches 16 km from Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road.

Faster Commutes: Travel Time Cut by 61%

The new underpass, located near Kings’ School at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and Al Barsha South Street, is already making a big impact. The tunnel, which features four lanes in each direction, has reduced travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 minutes to just 3.8 minutes — a massive 61% improvement.

With a capacity of 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, this upgrade is expected to benefit over one million people living in nearby residential communities such as:

  • Dubai Hills
  • Arjan
  • Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3
  • Dubai Science Park

Strategic Connectivity Between Dubai’s Key Highways

The Umm Suqeim Street tunnel is now a vital link connecting four of Dubai’s most important roads:

  • Sheikh Zayed Road
  • Al Khail Road
  • Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road
  • Emirates Road

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the project marks a critical step in boosting east–west connectivity and relieving pressure on north–south corridors.

Smart Tech-Driven Construction

Using AI-equipped drones, real-time construction data, and time-lapse imaging, the RTA dramatically:

  • Reduced field survey time by 60%
  • Doubled on-site presence
  • Increased monitoring efficiency by 40%

These innovations ensured smoother operations and faster decision-making throughout the project.

Building on Past Successes

This tunnel is the latest in a series of upgrades along Umm Suqeim Street. Highlights from earlier phases include:

  • In 2013, RTA built two bridges between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.
  • In 2020, a 500-metre bridge was completed near Dubai Hills Mall to handle rising traffic demands.

Now, the 800-metre tunnel joins these efforts, reinforcing Umm Suqeim Street as one of the city’s most strategically vital roadways.

Why This Matters

Dubai’s rapid urban expansion requires smart, scalable transport solutions. This new tunnel is more than just a piece of infrastructure it’s a lifeline for smoother mobility, supporting the needs of growing communities while future-proofing the city’s road network.

As the RTA continues to deploy cutting-edge tech and forward-thinking strategies, Dubai is once again setting global benchmarks for urban planning and sustainable development.
